Empyrean was recorded on a small studio setup in an apartment in London, Ontario, Canada. Instruments and gear used include a Fender Squier Stratocaster Affinity Series in Black and White and a POD HD Multi-effect Interface routed into Adobe Audition for the DAW. Nothing additional was used other than provided effects within the interface and tools within the DAW. Bass tones were provided by pitch-shifting the guitar on certain songs if needed, especially So On The Earth Below.
Mixing and mastering was professionally done in a studio within Stockholm, Sweden by J.M. Productions. For the eponymous track, a '70's era analog space echo effect was used within the mixing process that added an amazing ethereal effect to the clean sections. This was then reused to similar effect for the clean tones in Lunar Tides and The Theory Of Forms.
An additional touch during mastering was running each of the mixed songs through an analog reel-to-reel machine; another piece of '70's era tech, a Telefunken M-15. It added this amazing warmth and became the extra “glue” that really ended up fitting the sound resulting in Empyrean feeling and sounding like an old vinyl record.
